About UICC
Founded in 1933, the International Union Against Cancer (UICC*) is the largest cancer fighting organization of its kind in the world, with more than 370 member organizations across 118 countries. With its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, UICC’s mission is to eliminate cancer as a life threatening disease for future generations.
Cancer is one of the biggest killers worldwide. This year alone, nearly 8 million people will die from the disease. Left unchecked, this figure is predicted to more than double to 17 million per year by 2030. However there is tremendous potential to effect change: approximately 40% of cancers are preventable, a further 30% are curable if detected early and treated appropriately and effective care can be provided to patients.
In partnership with its members, UICC is committed to delivering the targets of the World Cancer Declaration, which sets out 11 goals to be achieved by 2020. The organization aims to save millions of lives by focussing the world’s attention on what needs to be done by taking the lead in:
* Raising awareness of the issues and managing educational activities on a global scale;
* Creating a global network of influence to press governments to support the fight against cancer and shape global health policy;
* Taking action where it matters using UICC’s proven track record to identify and facilitate the rapid distribution of resources to those organizations that can quickly utilise funds to make a difference in their country or region.
UICC is an acronym of the Latin name; Unio Internationalis Contra Cancrum
Cancer kills more people than AIDS, Malaria, and TB combined and without immediate, significant improvements- preventable /curable cancers will continue to kill millions of people worldwide.
By signing and promoting the World Cancer Declaration, you will be joining a worldwide community that is calling on key decision makers to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease for future generations.
Help us reach our goal of 1,000,000 signatories - your support will help us advocate for a cancer free world and we will present this support to the world’s leaders at the first UN Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in September 2011.
There has only been one UN General Assembly Special Session, focused on health since 1945; the announcement of a special summit on NCDs is an unprecedented step in the battle against cancer and represents an opportunity for our generation to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease for future generations.
Together we are stronger! Help us reduce the global cancer burden, join our campaign today!
