CANSA
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA),as one of the leading cancer control organisations in Southern Africa, funds cancer research, influences policy makers and educates the public on the prevention and detection of cancer, as well as provides comprehensive support to people affected by or treated for cancer.
CANSA celebrates its 80th Anniversary in 2011. Eighty years is a significant milestone for any organisation, but it is particularly significant for a non-profit organisation. We are a big family of caring volunteers and staff who are united in the fight against cancer. CANSA has been caring for, and changing lives of countless people, for 80 years.
As a leading role player in cancer research, we are in partnership with the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), the Medical Research Council in the formation of the Cancer Research Initiative of South Africa (CARISA) – as well as the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC).
Our CANSA Research department spends more than R4,5 million rand on cancer research every year and is currently funding and supporting 30 research projects at universities and other research institutions across South Africa concerning cancer
biology (basic research) and therapy (experimental and clinical research). CANSA is one of the largest sponsors of type A research in the country.
In 2010, CANSA was rated as one of South Africa’s most trusted and admired NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisation) operating in the country by 2010 Ask Afrika Trust Barometer. CANSA was awarded with the 2009 World No Tobacco Day Achievement Award from the World Health Organisation (WHO). This was received in recognition of CANSA’s contributions in the fight against tobacco use in South Africa. We also received the 2010 South African NGO Web Award by South African NGO Network (SANGONeT). In addition, CANSA’s Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) Nicus Lodge was awarded the 2010 ‘Excellence in Service Delivery Award’ presented by the Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
Our wide-reaching health programme includes prevention and education campaigns, patient care and support in the form of 13 Interim Homes and the main metropolitan areas plus one hospitium (based in Polokwane) for out-of-town cancer patients, support centres that offer stoma and lymphoedema clinics, medical equipment hire, toll-free line and support to children and their families affected by cancer via our CANSA Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) programme. CANSA gives out free Cancer Coping kits in English, seSotho, isiZulu and Afrikaans funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
